She and Skandar had decided to meet up there, because well, their last encounter had gone so well. She was glad she could spend time with her new companion, for she really did want to get to know him better. Something about him drew her in, and she was both fascinated and frightened at her curiousness. She was just glad she had a new friend in Dirge, for she hadn't made many so far. Besides, Skandar was different… He was nice and warm and he made her feel safe somehow. She hadn't felt that way in awhile, and she rather liked it. It almost made her forget the terrors of being dead and not being able to see her friends again. She could care less about had family. Her family hated her and she hated them as well.
Autumn never got along with her parents. Maybe it didn't help that her father beat her when he got drunk and that her mother did nothing to stop him. And that the next morning he couldn't even look at her. One time she snapped and she ripped the paper out of his hands and screamed at him. She yelled and cried and showed him her bruises and asked how he could possibly do this to his daughter, his own daughter. And when he finally looked up at her, he had the coldest, blank eyes. And maybe it was then she had resigned into herself, giving up on any hope for her parents. Maybe it was then she realized she couldn't find love here. Not that she knew what love was. She only had a vague inkling of the idea of it, but not once had she really experienced it. Maybe she was just broken.
Sighing, Autumn pushed her parents out of her mind. There was no need to be so depressing when she was finally going to see Skandar again. He had been on her mind for quite awhile, not that she liked to admit it. It wasn't natural, so Autumn tried to ignore her growing interest in the boy. But she couldn't help but think about him, and hope that maybe he was thinking of her too. At least a little bit. Autumn had a million questions in her mind about him, yet none of them where really important at all. They were all trivial things, like what was his favorite food or color or place or music. Anything to know something more about Skandar.
Walking into the aquarium, Autumn scanned the place for Skandar. She was impatient as she tried to spot him among the bobbing heads. She kept her eyes trained on the door, for maybe he hadn't arrived yet. She was excited to see him again. She hoped he was excited to see her again.

"hey, autumn. it's me. it's, uh, skandar." shaking his head aggressively, he ran his fingers through his black hair. "i'm skandar," he added, rather idiotically, under his breath. she knew that, she knew his name. hell. he scurried over to one of the cars that had been stationed in the parking bay of the aquarium and stared blankly at one of the windows, taking in his reflection. "hey, autumn," he went over his words once more, fixing the hair he'd shaken out of place during his previous tyrant. "hello, autumn." too formal. "'sup, autumn?" too informal. "greetings, e-earthli-" too stupid. skandar's cheeks grew into a swollen ball as he drew in as much breath as he could hold, before choking it out again. he needed to calm down. this wasn't a date. it was an afternoon with a friend. except this friend, in particular, happened to be a girl. a very pretty one, at that. "pretty," skandar mumbled, his thoughts and actions becoming entangled. "stupid. you're so stupid," he said, rubbing the back of his neck as he checked his appearance once more. his hair looked alright, as alright as a black, messy mop could have possibly looked, given the circumstances. he wore a simple pair of blue-faded jeans, clean sneakers, a white t-shirt and a dark-washed jacket to keep out the chill he sometimes got when his nerves kicked in. it wasn't much, but given his usual attire of sloppy sneakers and a hoodie that had been worn a day too many since his arrival, it was clear he'd put some effort into the way he looked for the occasion. with good reason.
as he made his way inside, his blue eyes instantly latched onto a certain head of fiery red hair. it had to have been her. "autumn, hi." he swooped over his dialogue once more, in a slight whisper that kept his words to himself. as he drew closer, he took her in. that dress, the anxious look she seemed to wear so well. he slowed down, looking her over and smiling to himself. she hadn't noticed him, despite her eyes glued to the doors. he took the opportunity to sneak into a group of people and walk up to where she had been standing, slipping behind her and tapping her shoulder. "hey, skandar," he chirped excitedly, much to his dismay. he could have kicked himself in the head, right there and then. instead, he tugged on his earlobe nervously and scoffed. "i mean, autumn. hey, autumn. you look cool." cool.
they are my favourite thing

She turned around quickly. Skandar? Where was he? And when she turned, there he was. Saying his own name? "I mean, Autumn. Hey, Autumn. You look cool," she grinned at his silly mistake. Her stomach was flopping, and her heart was beating rather fast. What was even going on? "Hey, Autumn," she joked, poking fun at his little slip up, "I mean, Skandar." Out of sheer impulse, she threaded her arms under his and pulled him in close. Her face ended up somewhere near his collarbones, and Autumn hugged him for one [maybe two] seconds too long, before reluctantly letting go. She grinned up at him, thankful for the dim lighting that would hopefully hide her blush. "You're looking very handsome today!" she rocked back on her heels with a playful smile, "It's really nice to see you again." she stated with a shy smile, then quickly looked down at her shoes and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.
Autumn stood there, taking him in. His little motions that drove her insane, his height, his eyes, his smile. Basically, everything. She didn't want to admit it, he filled her up - her thoughts, her sight, her goddamn heart. Maybe she had just made a connection with him - maybe he was just different than most of her friends because well, he was good looking. And kind. And maybe she just found him to be more fascinating than most because… he was Skandar. That awkward, handsome, fun, friend, and she totally wasn't thinking about him way more than she should. She bit her lip. SHe felt this sort of uneasiness that was new, and she didn't quite understand where all of these odd little feelings came from. It felt dangerous but it also felt exhilarating and it all just seemed to come from Skandar. She didn't quite understand what was going on, but she was enjoying it.
"So uh… Penguins! I want to see penguins!" she took Skandar by the hand [something she rather liked doing] then pulled him to the penguin exhibit. It was one of the first things that was visible in the aquarium, and it was always the first stop. She watched them waddle around their tank and swim and slide. She couldn't help it, she laughed as she peered over the railing. Penguins just made her happy. They looked so carefree and they looked like the were having fun. They just had personalities, and Autumn loved that. She grinned over at Skandar. She wondered if he liked penguins too. It was a stupid thought, but hey. Anyone who liked penguins was clearly someone that should stick around.

he loved aquariums. everything, from the creatures that inhabited the area right down to the setting. the mood, even. he liked how the dark rooms were illuminated with the blue lights from all the tanks. it put the focus where it was meant to be - on the creatures. not that he could focus as much with autumn grinning up at him. he looked down at her, smacking his lips together in an awkward smirk. the next thing he knew, her head tapped against his chest as she pulled him into a small hug. that was all it was. a hug. his lips parted slightly, the surprise of it all beginning to dawn on him. this was the first hug he'd gotten, the first hug anyone had given him, since his death. slowly, but surely, he raised his arms, allowing his hands to caress her back gently before she pulled away again. he looked forward to hugging her more, if she'd let him. "th-thanks, you do too. i mean, not handsome. the female equivalent," he nodded, looking her over once again. he was certainly glad to see her again, too.
his gaze shot down to their hands as she began to drag him along with her. he chuckled at her actions, adorable as they were. he liked it. stopping at the penguins, it took him a good minute to peel his eyes off of her and plaster them onto the penguin exhibit. he watched them waddle around, some he watched swim. there was one penguin in particular, the tiniest of the lot, that seemed to hold his focus. he leaned in closer to autumn and pointed to where the penguin was shuffling, colliding with another - its mother, perhaps - in an attempt to keep warm. he thought back to the first time he'd visited the zoo back home with his own mother. he'd been so fascinated by all the animals, he begged his mom to stop by the gift shop to pick up a copy of the animal atlases they had in stock. he'd studied it better than his algebra. "you know," skandar started, watching the birds in amazement. "the fathers usually take care of the chicks." he nodded toward a male, diving effortlessly into the water. "they keep the eggs warm under their bellies." he poked his stomach gently, more to his own amusement. "and if they lose their baby, they'll swipe one from another family. probably scared of the consequences they'd face once the wife got back home." he chuckled, looking down at autumn for a while. watching her enjoy the view, listening to her laugh, it made him smile. "penguins," he murmured, a little embarrassed at the thought of opening up. "they're my favourite animal. next to otters. and wolves." he watched the penguins more intently. though, the real thing he'd been focussing on, was autumn. "wh-what about you?"

I mean, not handsome. The female equivalent." Autumn bit her lip and smiled at the compliment. "Pretty?" she suggested. That would be the female equivalent, wouldn't it? She hoped it was. It was generally very very nice when people called you pretty or beautiful. But for some reason, it meant even more to her because Skandar called her pretty. Something about that made her giddy. Besides, not many people called her pretty. It wasn't common for someone to just tell her she looked pretty. Sometimes her friends would talk about what their parents called them, "pretty" or "talented" but no one in Autumn's household bothered to tell her. So she just let it go. Their parents were just more loving than hers. She was just happy to think someone thought that of her.
Autumn's eye were just jumping from penguin to penguin, not really wanting to miss anything cute or funny. She felt Skandar shift behind her, and she turned to look at him. He had leaned in and was pointing at a smaller penguin. She watched as the penguin shuffled, then collided with another penguin. She laughed again. She became keenly aware of the warmth that radiated off of Skandar. It was nice. It made her the slightest bit warmer, and she was grateful for it. It was a bit chilly near the penguins. "You know, the fathers usually take care of the chicks," Autumn turned to look at Skandar as he talked, "They keep the eggs warm under their bellies." He poked his own stomach and Autumn grinned. "And if they lose their baby, they'll swipe one from another family. Probably scared of the consequences they'd face once the wife got back home." Skandar chuckled, and Autumn couldn't help but smile - partly because of Skandar's comment, but mostly because of Skandar's chuckle. It was contagious. Autumn leaned back into him slightly, so her back touched his stomach. "You'd make a good papa penguin," she joked, "You're very warm."
"Penguins. They're my favorite animal. Next to otters. And wolves. Wh- what about you?" Skandar asked and she thought about it. She liked most animals. It didn't really matter to her, but of course, she felt like she should choose something. "Kind of common, but I really like cats," she smiled, remembering her furry friend that she had owned briefly, "And of course penguins. You have to love penguins. I also like badgers, and I do like wolves a lot as well. I used to draw wolves a lot."

it was true skandar wasn't the best sport when it came to girls. he'd never been a smooth-talking casanova or had the hair flick that sent girls to their knees. but he had older brothers. both of which, had those qualities. any knowledge he had about the opposite sex came from his brothers, his mother and what he'd managed to pick up for himself from the girls he observed on a daily basis. but, it didn't take a whole wad of sense to know that the girl standing in front of him was a remarkable one. everything from the colour and the curls in her hair right down to way she dressed, screamed unconventional. he was sure she was used to being called beautiful by now. hell, she must have heard a solid three times a day in his opinion. anything he could have told her at that moment wouldn't be justice to what he really thought of her - how he really saw her. "yeah," he nodded, snapping his fingers as if she had managed to find the exact word he was looking for. "that's it. you look pretty." what an idiot he was.
his blue eyes widened in absolute horror when he felt her weight push up against his torso. his arms twitched slightly, itching to hold onto her waist like he'd seen his brothers do with their girlfriends. but autumn wasn't his girlfriend, she wasn't his to hold. he looked down at her, she must have been a few inches away at that point, and quivered his lips nervously. "are you cold?" he asked, moving away from her slightly. he shuffled his arms, shaking his jacket off his shoulders before holding it out for her. "put your arms through," he gestured, holding the sleeves up. "cats are cool." he said casually, thinking back to the stray he found when he was little. "i had a cat named jessup, once. he didn't like me very much." and he had the scars to prove it. "badgers are cool too." there was that word again. cool. "my favourite's the honey badger. you know, honey badgers eat snakes if they can't find any honey or bee larvae. pretty odd, considering the hufflepuff house from harry potter was looked down upon a lot. ironically, by slytherins. you know, snakes." he was rambling. about futile nonsense that she probably had no interest in. "sorry." skandar rubbed the back of his neck once more, moving to the side slightly to give others a chance to marvel at the penguins. "you draw?"

You look pretty," he said, snapping his fingers, as if something had clicked in his brain. Autumn smiled. "Thanks. I don't get that a lot." She nodded. Even her ex boyfriend hadn't told her that she was pretty. They had never been that close. Sure, he would give her flowers and do whatever he thought boyfriends should do, but it was probably clear to anyone that saw them that their relationship was one-sided. Autumn didn't get love. She had said yes because he was a good friend of hers, and she thought maybe that's what love was. But she was wrong. And that was fine, but he tried so hard for her. It made Autumn sad that she couldn't feel the same devotion to him as he did for her. She ended up breaking it off because it was clear that she didn't have the same "love" that he did. Both of them saw the end coming. He knew from the beginning that she wasn't going to ever love him back. And Autumn never dated again after that. The idea of love confused her to say the least, and when her friends complained to her about how stupid their boyfriends were, she was appalled by dating even further. Needless to say, Autumn didn't understand love at all.
When she moved away, Skandar asked, "Are you cold?" she turned around to face him. She had to admit, it was a bit chilly in the aquarium, but it was nothing she couldn't handle. "Ah, no really its.." her voice faded as he took off his jacket and handed it too her. "Put your arms through." He held the sleeves up for her, and she threaded her arms through the proper holes. When it was on her she was immediately was overwhelmed by the smell of, well, Skandar. And that wasn't a bad thing. She liked it. She felt closer to him. It was a bit oversized, but she liked that. There was something about wearing his jacket that made her feel like she was his, or something along those lines. But it was a stupid thought, so she pushed it aside.
"Cats are cool. I had a cat named Jessup, once. He didn't like me very much," Autumn grinned. "That's hard to believe. You're very likable," she smiled and patted his shoulder. "Badgers are cool too. My favorite's the honey badger. You know, honey badgers eat snakes if they can't find any honey or bee larvae. Pretty odd, considering the Hufflepuff house from Harry Patter was looked down upon a lot. Ironically, by Slytherins. You know, snakes," Autumn laughed. So he read too? Something about that made Autumn like him more. not many people read these days; or at least that's how Autumn felt. "Sorry," he added. Autumn grinned, "Don't be sorry! I love that you read! Harry Potter is such a good series! One of my favorites. I'm a Hufflepuff, actually."
"You draw?" Skandar asked. Autumn nodded. "A little bit. I really like art. So I mean I draw and paint, but it's nothing amazing." She noted the amount of people gathering around the penguins. She figured that they'd looked at them long enough, so she grabbed his hand yet again, to pull him out of the crowd. When they got into a mostly clear area, Autumn stood there [yes, still holding his hand] and said, "Where to next?"
