[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 420px; height: 300px; padding: 10px;background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/DAA2R.png);] Mitosis is the process of which a eukaryotic cell separates the chromosomes in its cell nucleus in two identical sets and into two separate nuclei.
That was simple enough to remember.
So why couldn’t the rest of his classmates understand the concept? Rather yet- what part of mitosis was difficult to understand?
That was the only issue that Mikhail had. The professor had gone over the concept several times and there were still who did not understand. Mikhail did not mind when the professor had gone over it three times- he knew that the learning process was different for each individual. Seven times however, was clearly pushing it. He almost felt as if they were all testing his patience and it was truly saying something since Mikhail had the patience of a lifetime, well, to an extent. The situation was truly becoming worse when the professor addressed to the entire class that midterms were to start soon and that she would be handing out review sheets at that present moment.
Joy.
Mikhail could almost weep at the constant calls and requests he was going to receive regarding tutoring. He never should have signed up for student tutoring. He regretted it very much so. Alas, he made a commitment and he had to stick to it… even if it meant losing his patience and sanity for it. Whoever was to be his student for the hour had to understand at least a few of the concepts of cell division and the types of cells that exist.
It was not that Mikhail hated biology. In fact, it fascinated him and he would have loved to pursue a career in the subject, were it not for his family. Sighing quietly, Mikhail waited for the professor to dismiss the class so he could make his way to the library and get ready for whoever he was supposed to tutor. The review sheets finally came around to his row after what could have been an eternity. Once the last paper was handed out, the professor decided then to finally dismiss the class. Mikhail and his classmates began to pack up. He took his time however, while packing up. He was immediately approached by a small black haired girl with big brown pleading eyes and he had to fight an urge to sigh loudly in her face.
“Sorry, Mikhail, but I totally need your help!” she pleaded quietly.
He didn’t say anything.
“Please, I’ll totally make it up for you somehow!” she continued on.
“Delia, you just need to-“ Mikhail began.
“I know, I know! But you’re the only one I can actually count on! Last time you tutored me, everything made sense!” Delia pleaded.
Mikhail waited a moment before answering, “Alright, alright… I will help you a few days from now.”
He hated being nice sometimes.
Her eyes lit up in happiness and she gave him a wide grin, “Thank you so much! You are literally the best!” with that said, Delia waved goodbye as she left the classroom.
He took in a deep breath through his nose and let it out quietly through his mouth. Mikhail finished packing the rest of his supplies and left the classroom to walk to the library and once he arrived, he sat down in his usual table and turned to a fellow tutor and sighed. The other tutor stared at Mikhail and offered a small smile, “You’ll survive! I believe in you.” He said.
“Thanks…” Mikhail mumbled out, as he took out a pencil and a notebook scrawled with notes and diagrams and all that about biology.
It was going to be a long day.

It had been weeks since she had seen Mikhail and learned the news of her family's betrayal, although she still believed it to be false. There was no reason for them to do such a thing. Betrayal was stupid and dangerous. It only resulted in everyone in the family being hurt, not just the one who had been the cause. Rats were never welcomed, whether they were in the family or not. They deserved to be disposed of because they were of no use to anyone but themselves. That didn't last long either though.
Mikhail hadn't been on her mind at all really since their last encounter. She hadn't seen him or even been bothered by him, which was fine by her. He was hiding something, whether he wanted to admit it or not she knew. There was something more that he should have been telling her that he wasn't. It was not an important matter because she had other things to worry about, like her classes.
This was yet another place for her to have to restart her life with school but at least she spoke the language. Her trouble was in science. For some reason none of it made sense in her mind. It was a jumbled mess in hieroglyphics that she was never meant to understand. The subject matter seemed rather silly when compared to the fact that everyone was dead and yet still alive somehow. There was no life to even study.
With the help of a tutor perhaps she could stand a chance in the class. Ania was never one to ask for help. That was unheard of, especially when she was alive. Her family never needed help and they got everything they had by their own merit. She hated thinking that she had to talk to someone to get assistance but she knew her parents would scold her for being so prideful about not asking for school help. That was acceptable.
She had signed up for tutoring at the library. There was a group of students who did the tutoring and they likely got paid for it. If one had a service to render they should never do it for free. There was no way of knowing who her tutor would be but at this point she was willing to take the risk. They had to know more or else they wouldn't be allowed to be a tutor.
With everything biology related that she had she made her way to the section of the library that was for tutoring. She was given a number, marking the table of who she would be working with. Walking up to it she hadn't yet noticed who her tutor was because she was distracted by the amount of people there. It was reassuring to see that other people were in need of help for their other classes, although she knew this was going to only happen once for herself. "ania." she said as a brief introduction as her focus went back to the table she would be working at. she froze for a moment when she realized who her tutor was. what sort of hell was this?

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 420px; height: 300px; padding: 10px;background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/DAA2R.png);] Mikhail had mixed feelings about walk-in tutoring appointments. Sure, desperate times come from desperate measures and Mikhail knew that all too well. Yet it wouldn’t have hurt if a person scheduled an appointment. Walk-in appointments clashed with scheduled ones and Mikhail and the other tutors could only sacrifice such little time to them. It wasn’t fair to others and Mikhail knew that. Over the course that he had been tutoring (which honestly wasn’t that long ago) he had to deal with the brunt of the walk-ins. He wasn’t sure why he was the only one that dealt with them, but a fellow tutor had told him that it happens all the time.
Still.
It caused Mikhail to be annoyed at times. But he would calm down and aid the student anyway. On the bright side though, he was paid for it and he had been saving up on his blue card so that was good.
It hadn’t been long since Mikhail arrived that the students with scheduled tutoring arrived in the library. It didn’t even take long for the other tutors to meet the ones they were going to teach for the hour or so and Mikhail wondered when his student was going to arrive- whoever they were. He twirled the pencil around in his hand, waiting patiently for his student to arrive and while he did, his mind began to wonder about what he was going to do with his death-life after college. Sure, he did enjoy learning about biology but that didn’t give him enough reason to go into the field. Even so, he did learn from someone that graduates taught in the high school or even the college. Dirge had an odd system, really. What if he wanted to spend his time working as an usher in the movie theater? What if he wanted to have a job where all he did was eat pizza and ice cream? Well, he wouldn’t want those jobs but it did make him wonder about the absurdity of the Dirge.
It wasn’t long before his table- table number five was filled up with students. One chair was left and that was the one beside Mikhail. Maybe that time around, there wouldn’t be any walk-ins. Maybe it would be the day. He flipped through the notes in his notebook (which he had organized very neatly) and stopped at the table of contents he made for himself. Mikhail was always the meticulous sort; but only for tutoring. His own book was left as it was when he was in class- messy but legible and understandable to him. Mikhail could almost give himself a pat on the back for his efforts (but he didn’t).
His train of thoughts was interrupted however, when he heard someone speak up near him. He wasn’t sure who it was, but he was sure he heard ‘Ann’. Mikhail blinked slowly and a small friendly smile was on his face as he turned to whoever Ann was. “Hey, took you long…” He began, jokingly. His smile faltered however, when he saw her and he stopped himself from speaking further. She definitely wasn’t an Ann, alright. Out of everyone, she was the last person that he would expect to see. And seeing her again only made the situation more awkward. It continued to be so as he remembered from what happened the last time they met. Okay Mikhail, there is no need to think about the past. The only thing that matters right now is biology. Biology, mitosis, cell division… that’s all. He thought.
“Right, what do you need help with?” he asked. Well… so far so good.

The one time she decided to ask for help and she got Mikhail. She was never a true believer in signs and if this was supposed to be one she could easily disregard it and take it only as bad luck. That was all his family had brought to her after all and it seemed that such an ability still was possible when dead. She watched as he started to smile and joke with her before he realized who she was and froze himself. They were in the same mindset at least for a good reason.
Before she was able to say anything in order to walk away and act as if nothing happened Mikhail spoke first, asking what she needed help with. She didn't want or need his help. He hadn't been willing to give it before. All he had to offer was his version of the truth which was too misconstrued to believe. Even though she knew there were some things he had not taken part of there were others that she still questioned. For a moment she wanted to question if he was only going to be pleasant because they had people around this time, unlike their last few encounters.
After debating with herself mentally she decided that she did need the help with biology and Mikhail seemed to be the only one available. She wasn't going to let him think that he could stop her from doing anything she pleased, because he couldn't. She wouldn't let him. If anything they could get the tutoring done and be done with it. If she dared at the end, which she likely would, Ania would question once more about what he was hiding. "biology." she answered as she took the only open chair near him. setting down her items she opened her notebook to what notes she had that still were gibberish to her.
"there's some test coming up and i understand little of it." |
[/b] she said, making sure to say little instead of none. she wasn't going to look like a complete fool in front of him, hopefully. if he was at this table then she was assigned to him for a reason. she had specified upon signing up that she needed help in biology. perhaps that made him an expert. "is that something you know enough about or should i ask for someone else?" she questioned as she offered up the study guide for him to look over. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 420px; height: 300px; padding: 10px;background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/DAA2R.png);] There couldn’t possibly be any words to describe just how awkward Mikhail’s current situation was. He doubted that she would even want his help, not after last time. He waited patiently for her to speak up and wondered if she was to leave the tutoring table even if she did sign up for it. He hadn’t said anything, not finding any other words to speak to her after he asked her if there was anything she needed assistance with. Mikhail looked down at his notebook instead of staring at her and waiting for an answer.
After what seemed to be an eternity, she finally spoke up saying that she needed help with biology. Yes well, he knew that. He didn’t mean the subject she needed help in, but rather the topic. Either way, it didn’t matter. He opened his mouth to ask her which topic she had trouble in but his question was half answered. “Which topic do you need help in the most?” he asked her. They might as well begin from the trouble starts and then work their way towards the easier concepts. That sounded like a good plan. “It is getting closer to midterm week.” He pointed out. Mikhail had no intention of being rude. He merely pointed it out. He simply hoped that he did not come out as such.
Mikhail turned to her in amazement and tried not to chuckle. Really now, he was at the biology table as a biology tutor and she believed that he did not know enough of the subject? The very thought was funny and he tried his best not to let a small smile appear but to no avail. “No… you can ask me.” He replied, amused. ‘Everyone else is busy, anyway.’ He thought. He took the paper from her and scanned it. It seemed simple enough. “We can follow the study guide if that would help you more.” He added.

She had to think for a moment in regards to which topic she needed assistance with. Cells made sense to her even though it was at such a small level but everything had a purpose just as everyone in the mafia had. It was not hard to understand genetics and how it was the chemical makeup of a person. The trouble came with homeostasis. She understood that everything needed to be regulated, too much of a good thing would only ruin something. It was the breakdown of it all that had her confused.
"Homeostasis." she answered before nodding, "You don't need to remind me about that. It's bad enough that we're dead but now they are still testing us on our knowledge from school about things that make little sense because we are dead." Biology was the study of life, not the study of death. If they were all dead but living it was hard to imagine how the same concepts applied.
"What is so funny?" she questioned as he seemed to grin at her question. Had there been something she missed? Or perhaps did he find it amusing that she needed help and that she had to come to him in order to get it? Either way she did not like it in the slightest. "I all ready have most of the study guide learned." she answered as she took it the paper back for a moment. Grabbing a pen she crossed off the different topics that didn't need to be discussed before showing it to him once more.
"These are the only ones I need. The negative feedback, autotrophs, phototrophs, and all those things related to homeostasis and energy along with it." she explained, "Once I have these mastered then I won't have to worry about the silly tests." Pausing for a moment she waited to hear if he would claim to all ready know it all or just begin by asking what she all ready knew, which was very little. "Are you ready for your own midterms to have this time to tutor others?" she questioned out of curiosity. It did not surprise her that Mikhail was smart, he always had been even when they were younger. If he hadn't done well in school it would have been a waste of his mind.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 420px; height: 300px; padding: 10px;background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/DAA2R.png);] In all respect, Mikhail could merely agree with Ania regarding her thoughts on education in dirge. There were contradictions yes, Mikhail was aware of that. Despite that, he still kept education in a high regard even with biology, even if the topic was the opposite of it all. It did not make much sense as he thought about it but he deemed it better to not think about it when there were more important tasks to deal with (the main task being the tutoring). “I suppose they desire to make us try to continue our lives as though we were still living?” he pondered. “I cannot seem to find any other reason without having to bring philosophy into the discussion.” Mikhail added offhandedly. “Back to the topic on hand…”
Mikhail paused for a moment however, when she asked him what was so humorous. “I only found it comical that you would ask if I would know enough of biology in order to tutor.” He answered. He realized that it was a rather rhetorical statement of hers, but it still amused him nonetheless. Mikhail had to change the topic quickly. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing.” He watched as she took the study guide back and as she crossed off the topics she already knew. Once Mikhail had the paper again, he scanned over the topics that did not need to gone over. She began to explain the topics (including homeostasis) that she did need to help with and thought about how he would go over it.
He’d start with the basics of homeostasis. That seemed like a good start.
“I am ready for my tests.” He quickly answered. Mikhail had almost finished going through the material for all four of his classes, biology being one of the four. He merely had to go over art history one more time and memorize a few more dates and he would be fine (hopefully). Ania was right about one thing- the tests were silly. He had no choice in the matter, however. But he was deviating from what he had to do at the moment, at that was to tutor. Mikhail hoped that he hadn’t taken time away from the actual duration of the session with his nonsense.
“Let’s start off with the basics of homeostasis and then build on from that. Is that alright with you?” he asked. He quickly flipped the pages in his notebook to the section on homeostasis and such.
“Homeostasis occurs in two places. One place is within the body and the second occurs in an ecosystem. Homeostasis regulates the internal environment and tends to maintain a constant or stable condition.” Mikhail began. “In the body, homeostasis is the balance of everything and it is regulated by two responses, hormonal and nervous. Hormones are released into the bloodstream and in other cases, just simple diffusion.” He continued. “There is a balance as well within an ecosystem. An example of that could be something such as the balance of the population of a certain animal.” Mikhail paused for a moment and turned to Ania if she had any questions so far.

Continue their lives as though they were still living? That would mean that there was not point in dying if everything were to stay the same. Nothing was exactly the same though. Ania remembered how Mikhail had controlled her just by talking, referring to himself as a zombie. It sounded childish to think of a person as some silly monster but as Ania learned more about this wonderland she discovered everyone was a creature of sorts with abilities, although hers still remained a mystery. She didn't care to find out what she was so long as there wasn't a need to. "It seems like one big lie or a dream." she muttered as he mentioned bringin philosophy into the discussion.
"I only asked because I thought there were certain tutors for each subject unless you are, how they say a jack of all trades." she explained. She didn't doubt what he could learn, rather what he all ready knew. School wasn't necessarily as important for the men in the mafia unless it dealt with business, money was power after all. The study of life seemed counterproductive when members of the mafia were busy ending lives of those who opposed them. It was quite the turn of events to think about when it came to how they were supposed to live now. There were no mafias involved anywhere, at least not that she knew of.
She nodded after he suggested starting off with the basics of homeostasis. That was for the best. Perhaps if she had enough of the basics she would be able to manage the test. As she listened to him she found herself thinking of those men who had tortured her. Her body had tried to regulate her breathing as well as her heart rate while they worked to achieve the opposite results. There was some real life experience that related to the subject. At his mention of animal populations she sighed, thinking of sheep sent to be slaughtered.
"Similar to the wolves who hunt after sheep." she suggested, "If they eat too many then they will starve from the lack of meat available, giving the sheep a chance to come back in numbers again." Just like her own family, they had been slaughtered by the wolves but their chance of coming back again was nonexistent. She was dead and her parents were the only ones alive. The wolves would have to find another source for their hunting. "It makes sense." she nodded, ready for him to continue.
