i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best Olliver was having a tough day. It was one of those days where everything reminded him of his past life - something he missed sorely. Sure, he had people like Ashley and Vince, and many others here… But it wasn't the same. He didn't have any immediate family here. Not that he wanted family here - that would mean that they were dead. Not good. But he missed them all the same. Ollie wished he could see if they were okay, if they were happy now. All he wanted was for his family and friends to be happy, and dying really wasn't helping that cause. He sighed. There really was no way to escape these memories. They'd always be apart of Olliver, he knew that. But sometimes he just wished it didn't hurt so much.
On top of that, he'd had another nightmare. Bree bleeding, dying of the gunshot he was supposed to take… Her parents screaming and crying, his parents screaming and crying. And blood. Blood everywhere; on his clothes, hands, on Bree. It made him queasy thinking about it. He hated it. Of course, everything actually hadn't happened like that. He was the dead one. She was alive. But it didn't change the fact that he'd woken up, sweating, heart pounding, and near tears.
Would it ever stop?
And although he wanted to forget everything that he left behind, he knew that one thing that would calm him down was cooking. Well, baking actually. Something he and his mum did often. And though she was Korean, they never did bake any Korean goods. Which was kind of disappointing for Ollie, but he had fun all the same. They would dance around, laughing and singing along to whatever music they picked. Those times were always precious for Ollie. When he was seven, it seemed like magic. She'd wake him up early in the morning, "Ravioli [her nickname for him], wake up. Let's bake," that's all she had to say for young Olliver to jump out of bed and join her in the kitchen.
Olliver sighed as he made his way to the grocery store. The memories made him happy yet sad. If he was still alive, he'd still be baking with his mum. And he could still bake here, but dancing alone, singing alone - it was lonely, for lack of a better word. The kitchen felt empty. Sometimes Charlotte would join him if she were in the dorm. When he cooked dinner for the two of them, or baked them cupcakes. And that made him really happy. It was almost like old times. But those times when he was by himself? It almost drove him crazy.
When he made it to the store, he made his way to the baking aisle. As he expected, he was the only person in the aisle. And if there were others here, he'd probably be the only guy. He couldn't help it, he laughed at the thought. A lot of people thought he was pretty girly. Some people called him gay. It hurt him at first, but then he just brushed it off. They didn't know him. Of course, somewhere deep down it'd always hurt him, but he barely socialized anyway.
Olliver sighed again as he picked out food coloring, chocolate cake mix… He went over a list of things he needed to buy from the store in his mind.

tags: olliver words: 350+ notes: let's pretend i know what i'm doing. | it was time to cook, something, anything at all that was real food. it couldn't be something that she could easily buy at the school cafeteria. the food was all right, sure, but it was similar to a fast food restaurant. she wasn't completely concerned about her figure but she didn't want to be eating such food all the time. it would only slow her down in the long run, especially when she did go running. instead of getting better she would be spending time trying to get rid of all the grease from the food she ate. the thought made her shudder in disgust. now was the time for her to explore just a bit. there had to be a grocery store of some sort to get all the food that was cooked and prepared at the school and she was going to find it. ariella didn't mind wandering around the small town that made up the dirge, only because she was finding out more about what the dirge had to offer her. it was nothing like home, only because there wasn't as much to do, at least not as far as she had seen. at least it wasn't some podunk little town with nothing to do at all.
as she walked she finally saw the sign for the grocery store, which wasn't too far from her apartment so that was nice. once inside it seemed to be quite deserted, although that was probably only to her eyes because she was used to places being jam packed with people. then again almost everyone inside appeared to be an employee. picking up a small hand basket she carried it with her as she began walking past a few of the aisles. nothing had caught her eye yet, although she didn't have very much in mind. she had been hoping to get some ideas as she wandered around but all she could think about was something sweet. turning onto the baking aisle she wondered if there would be any good brownie or cookie mixes. in front of her seemed to be the only person who didn't actually work at the grocery store and he was picking out something to make a treat as well. "your sweet tooth acting up as well?" she questioned with a smile.

i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best Olliver started humming, singing some song he'd heard somewhere. He didn't even know the lyrics, but he didn't care. No one was around to hear him hum. Not that he minded. He was pretty confident when it came to singing. He didn't mind singing at all. He was starting to feel better when a voice behind him said, "You sweet tooth acting up as well?" it was a female voice, Olliver knew that. She sounded nice enough. No reason for Ollie to be shy. But that was the thing. He was always shy. It didn't matter when or why, he just was. And he really shouldn't be, it wasn't a big deal. It was a stranger, that was all.
He turned to face the girl. She was pretty. Asian. Korean? Olliver smiled shyly. "Not really… I just bake to um, feel better, I guess…" Well, that wasn't entirely true. For instance, last week he baked because he wanted something sweet. He ran a hand through his hair. "I mean, I guess I do want something ah, sweet…" he continued.
Olliver wondered if she was going to bake too. He hadn't seen many people come into the grocery. And he respected people who could bake or cook. It really was a difficult skill, and for someone to learn it was impressive. Of course, there were easy things, like making a sandwich or cooking an egg. But Olliver found baking to be slightly more difficult. He enjoyed it though. It was always fun for him, especially decorating the cupcakes. He'd make icing, then come up with some design - sometimes he'd just frost them normally. Other times he made flowers or stripes. It just depended on how motivated he felt that day.
Isaac made cupcakes with him once. So did Bree. Olliver tried to shake the thoughts away. The sole reason why he was here was to get things to bake so he didn't think about it. He was doing a terrible job. It was hard when baking, the thing he loved to do, had so much to do with what he strived so hard to escape from. He didn't like the fact that he was dead. Maybe a few people here did; but he wasn't one of them. He wanted to be back with his family, his friends. Bree. He wanted all of that back. Ollie thought that the more time he spent here, the better it'd get. That wasn't the case. He wasn't feeling any better about the whole ordeal.
He smiled weakly at the stranger across from him.

tags: olliver words: 350+ notes: ha. | bake to feel better? well that made sense, if only one could just bake all of their troubles away. sadly it didn't always seem to work out like that. "it doesn't seem like there are many who bake here." she noted, considering the fact that they were the only two who seemed to be shopping and they both just so happened to be shopping for something to that they could bake or cook to eat. now that she got a better look at the boy in front of her she figured he was around her age, obviously asian, but she hadn't exactly expected to find a guy who would bake to feel better. not that she focused solely on stereotypes because it was a nice change of pace, but she couldn't help but wonder why baking made him feel better. there was probably some fond memory attached to it, just like she wanted to have something that was normal at home. "sorry, i'm ariella." she said to introduce herself, "if there's anyone here who can cook or bake then they are worth knowing." really it was anyone who was nice was worth knowing and she was all ready getting that vibe from the guy in front of her.
"so what are you thinking of making?" she questioned as she peeked at his basket before looking at the different options on the aisle, "i know i want brownies or something along those lines. just for a treat of course. after that i need to find some real food that i can't get at a fast food restaurant. something more home cooked, of course i'll i have to find where that is." that would take a little more exploring up and down the different aisles but that wouldn't be difficult. there just had to be a section with all the familiar ingredients that she was used to cooking with. if not she would be in trouble.

i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best "It doesn't seem like there are many who bake here." Ollie let a small smile creep up on his lips. He had noticed that too. It's one thing to bake, but it's another to bake with someone else. He enjoyed it, considering he was used to cooking with his mum. Sure, it was cheesy. But his mother was his only family that he really connected to. His father had never been present in his life. He had always been to busy to spend time with his son. And maybe part of that was because Ollie would never be the son that he wanted - sports loving, jockey, "manly". Ollie was "artsy" if anything. And his mum appreciated it. Pops, however, didn't.
But baking had always been something he'd done with his mum. Because she'd always be willing to spend time with him. So they baked and they danced. It was fun too, the dancing. It's probably where most of his experience came from. His mother had been a ballerina in Korea, before moving to England to work with other dancers. She'd met his father, and a few years later, there was Ollie. So she'd always been set on trying to get him to dance. And Ollie did. And he loved it. "Yeah. There don't seem to be many; I've been looking for someone to bake with, but there seems to be no one." he finally replied.
"Sorry, I'm Ariella." Ollie smiled. The name didn't sound Korean, but he just had a feeling. He knew she was Asian, but something told him she was Korean. Stupid, but it was instinct. "Annyeong, noona. My name is Olliver." He wondered if noona was the correct term. If anything it was respectful. Unless she wanted to seem younger than she was. Ollie didn't speak much Korean, but he could certainly understand it. He knew a few phrases here and there, and occasionally some would slip out of his mouth - simple things. Like "aigo" or "what" or "really". Single word phrases his mum grew him up with. "If there's anyone here who can cook or bake then they are worth knowing." Olliver smiled a bit. "Yeah. It's rare here." he said quietly.
"So what are you thinking of making? I know I want brownies or something along those lines. Just for a treat of course. After that I need to find some real food that I can't get at a fast food restaurant. Something more home cooked, of course I'll have to find where that is." Olliver felt his smile grow. She cooked and baked. Not bad. He could help her find the food, considering he'd probably been here a million times. He always cooked for himself and Charmander back at the dorm, so he was here quite often. He was always worried about Char and her health, so he tended to try to feed her healthier foods. "Um, cupcakes. I was, ah, thinking about chocolate cupcakes. Err, or red velvet. But they're the same thing. Did you know that? Red velvet cupcakes are just chocolate cupcakes with a ton of red food coloring…" He blushed a bit and smiled shyly. He was rambling. And he probably sounded pretty girly.
"As for the real food, I can help you find what you need. I've been here a lot."

tags: olliver words: 350+ notes: i'm late and i'm horrible with the korenglish? yeah shie knows what i'm talking about. | no one to bake with? for some reason ariella didn't find that too surprising, considering the fact that no one even shopped for the ingredients needed to cook, they were satisfied with the poor gourmet food they thought they bought at a fast food restaurant. "don't they have any cooking courses at the college?" she questioned before adding, "i suppose if they did you would probably be enrolled in it and not have to worry about finding someone to bake with." she still didn't know all the courses that the college offered, only because her course list had been handed to her and she agreed with all the courses. they were what she had been taking when she was alive and she didn't see a need to change any of them. the thought of a cooking class did sound fun though. just cooking with someone else would take things off her mind, or give her something to do besides her school work. "annyeong dongsaeng." she replied with a smile. so she was right about being asian, not that it had been a blunder to make, but he was korean too! "it's nice to meet you olliver." it seemed they both didn't have very traditional korean first names, although she was certain that his last name like hers would give it all away.
"you know, maybe we should bake together some time." she said boldly, "i mean, if you bake to feel better and are in need of someone to bake with i am in the same boat, although mine is just to take my mind off of school. it's just a thought." she shrugged a bit when she was done. baking with a perfect stranger didn't exactly sound like a safe idea, but for some reason he seemed harmless to her, like he couldn't do anything wrong even if he tried. "they are?" she questioned, "i never knew that. i mean, it would make sense since they always seemed to taste the same but who knew." she knew that she was no expert at cooking or baking. if anything she did it to survive if that still applied here in the dirge. she didn't know any fancy terms or what items were the same or different. she could follow a recipe simply enough and then call it good. "you can?" she questioned with a smile, "that would be a huge help and a relief. then i won't have to worry about spending so much time here that the employees start getting suspicious about what i'm attempting to do." people wouldn't have a need to steal anymore, at least ariella thought they wouldn't. it still wasn't something that she wanted to be suspected of. "i just need to get some simple ingredients for traditional dishes and all." she said with a wave of her hand.

i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best "Don't they have any cooking courses at the college?" Ollie shook his head. He remembered checking. But he had also felt worried - what if it wasn't what he wanted it to be? In the end, he stopped trying. He kept to his little kitchen in his little dorm room with Charmander. He never felt the need to get out. Occasionally he wished he had someone to cook with him; but Charlotte would dance with him sometimes, so it wasn't so bad. It wasn't so bad at all. "I suppose if they did you would probably be enrolled in it and not have to worry about finding someone to bake with," Olliver nodded again. "I looked for one for a while; but I don't think that there is one. I wish there was," he told her with a small smile.
"Annyeong dongsaeng. It's nice to meet you Olliver," he grinned. His instincts were pretty good. "It's nice to meet you too, Ariella," He nodded a bit, then found himself babbling about his mum, "Yeah, my mother is, er was, Korean. I don't speak much Korean! I wish I did." he laughed a bit. He wondered if he could still consider his mum, his mum. Since he was dead, did it make a difference? He didn't know. All he knew is that he missed her a lot. He hadn't seen her in a while, but now he wouldn't see her in, well, forever. And that really brought him down sometimes.
"You know, maybe we should bake together sometime. I mean, if you back to feel better and are in need of someone to bake with I am in the same boat, although mine is just to take my mind off of school. It's just a thought." Ariella shrugged. Olliver's eyes must have lit up; this was just the offer he'd been looking for. "Jinjja?" Olliver asked. He hadn't used his little bits of Korean in awhile, but for some reason he felt more comfortable with it, knowing that she was Korean. "I would love a partner!" Olliver exclaimed with a laugh. This was just perfect.
"They are? I never knew that. I mean, it would make sense since they always seemed to taste the same, but who knew," Olliver nodded and let out a little laugh, "I know! When mum told me, I felt like I'd been lied to," Olliver joked. Though it was kind of true. But then again, he had been a little kid at the time. Who could blame him? "You can? That would be a huge help and a relief. Then I won't have to worry about spending so much time here that the employees start getting suspicious about what I'm attempting," Olliver laughed. He liked Ariella. She seemed really nice, and it was always better to go food shopping with someone who loved to cook and bake too.
Olliver put a few more things into his basket. "I just need to get some simple ingredients for traditional dishes and all," she explained. "Oh, it's right this way," he said as he put confectioner's sugar into his basket. He began walking towards produce.

tags: olliver words: 350+ notes: finally i'm caught up, months later. | "it's a shame that they don't." she said as she shook her head, "they seem to have just about everything else here but no cooking classes is a bit ridiculous. people have to eat somehow and if they're going to let people continue on with the majors they had before then being a chef should be one of them. you may have to start your own cooking class or a club of some sort and have people join." it was just a thought but that could be more fun. having a professional who knew everything they were doing would have been more desirable but because that option didn't exist having a cooking club sounded like enough fun considering everyone would have something different to bring to the table. besides that it wouldn't have to be for a grade so there was less to worry about. "well then i'm going to have to teach you some." she offered after noticing he got quiet after talking about his mother. then she remembered that they likely wouldn't be seeing their parents any time soon, or would they even get to see their parents again? everything about this place was too new and unknown, which bothered her to no end. there were too many questions and not enough answers to have a good grip on what was happening.
with a smile ariella nodded to olliver, both surprised and happy that he was so excited to have a partner for cooking. in all honesty she was a little surprised by the fact that there weren't any girls hanging around him, only because he would be the perfect guy to have around for cooking because he loved it so much. either way it seemed that it would be great fun for the both of them. "i hate being lied to." she laughed, joking along with olliver, "that's a big deal so everyone needs to know that sort of thing." once olliver had grabbed what he needed she followed along after him, grateful that he didn't mind helping her. "i have to have my kimchi." she admitted, "i can barely stand the smell of half of the food here all cooked up in grease and who knows what else."

i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best "It's a shame that they don't," she shook her head, as Ollie nodded in agreement, "They seem to have just about everything else here but no cooking classes is a bit ridiculous. People have to eat somehow and if they're going to let people continue on with the majors they had before then being a chef should be one of them. You may have to start your own class or a flub of some sort and have people join." Olliver smiled a bit, but put his hands up, "Aigo, noona, I'm too shy. Besides, I'm nothing special, I couldn't run the club. Maybe a chef will appear one day and create a home ec class." Olliver rubbed the back of his neck. He could never runs club. He probably would loose the attention of everybody within the first five minutes. Though his mum [and his dad] tried their best to make him confident, it never really worked.
Olliver, attempting to practice the very little Korean he knew [also it was a habit] said, "Jin jja?" At least that's what he thought was the proper word. Honestly, he had no idea at this point. His mum only ever taught him slang, and the little she taught he had forgotten. He hadn't used Korean since he had gotten to Dirge. All of his words were rusty and he was starting to loose his accent. It made him sad to think that he was loosing that part of him. And it was an important part, because that's all he really had left of his life on Earth, besides maybe a few photographs that he had tucked away in a drawer for safe keeping.
"I hate being lied to," Ariella said with a smile, "That's a big deal so everyone needs to know that sort of thing." Olliver laughed a bit and said, "We can prevent children from having a terrible childhood if we notify everyone immediately." Olliver glanced behind him quickly to make sure Ella was still in tow. "I have to have my kimchi," she said when he looked back at her, "I can barely stand the smell of half of the food here all cooked up in grease and who knows what else." Olliver nodded. Most of the food here was okay, but some places he avoided like the plague. His mother had always made him food, so he did prefer home cooked meals. "I personally need duk mandu guk," he said with a smile, "I used to have it when I was sick." When they made it to produce, Ollie immediately picked up come packages of blueberries and raspberries. He also picked up other fruits because their dorm was running low. And Charlotte needed quick food in the house. "Here we are." he said to Ariella.

tags: olliver words: 350+ notes: italicized is korean because i don't know any. | he was shy? to her olliver didn't seem to be that shy but perhaps it depended on who he was around. she knew there were people who were open with some and closed to others and that might have been the case with olliver. ariella could understand it though, it was hard to open up to someone not necessarily sharing secrets but in letting them know how you really were in mannerisms. that wouldn't be the reason why girls weren't all over him of course, it seemed there were few girls who could keep their mouth closed for more than a few seconds. either way it was there loss. "well you can't go around thinking that you're not special, that's not the case in the slightest. we all have something that makes us who we are. besides, if you just wait around for someone else to do something you will either end up dissapointed in the outcome or continuously waiting." if he truly did enjoy cooking then he would find a way to get something started whether it was with a small or large group of people. it wouldn't be that hard. "of course." she said with a smile, "it won't be that hard so long as you have the opportunity to practice and you do actually practice." that would allow her the opportunity to practice speaking the language as well, considering she hadn't met many koreans in the dirge. english seemed to be the common tongue thus far, unless she had missed the signs pointing where to go for a different language.
"we'll have to get on that. perhaps a mass text message will do the trick considering everyone has a cell phone now." she said before she laughed. saving children's lives through text messages, how ironic when considering she knew there were people who had died in car accidents because they were texting. it was as if anything could be dangerous, no matter how simple or small it was. "oh that sounds good." she replied, "it sounds like that is your comfort food." it was something that reminded him of home, a place that even she didn't want to regret. all of the cooking she had done with family was now coming to use in her death, although there would no longer be the large family gatherings for the holidays to enjoy all of the food. "i think i'm going to have to make a map outline of this store so i can get in and out quickly." she said as she began grabbing the different ingredients she would need in order to keep herself from starving or daring to try the food offered in the dirge. "thanks again." she offered when she realized she had all the ingredients that were written down on her list.
